Summary of Answer:

The Samaritans was a people group who are descendants owing to the intermarriage of Jews and Assyrians. The Assyrian captivity started in 721 BC when the Assyrians conquered the ten northern tribes of Israel. They did two things: Firstly, they exiled the Jews to Assyria. Secondly, for those who remined, they brought the Assyrians to the land of Israel and there they intermarried and they became known as Samaritans. The Samaritans syncretized and corrupted the Torah to give the Samarian Pentateuch.
