Because it’s fun

My son is still a child. He do things because it’s fun. He plays the ipad because it’s fun. He likes to go to school because that’s where his friends are. He does not hate reading the bible history books but neither does he find it fun to do so and does not read it on his own. To motivate him to do something, there should be a reward so that he can do something fun like playing a new game on the ipad after completing the task.

So that’s why he has a parent like me to monitor him and to guide him. That’s why I need to make sure that he reads the bible history. That’s why I need to make sure that he does his math on the practice website. That’s why I need to make sure that he does his language homework and hands it in school. That’s why he is going for chinese lessons so that he will learn how to speak chinese. That’s why he’s doing his reading in English everyday so that he will improve his vocabulary. He need to do all that not because he likes it but because he has to. It is a parent’s job to make sure that he does it. As long as he does not hate it all too much, that is ok.

Unable to recognise God’s sign

On that day, I picked up my phone and called an old neighbor of mine, an old lady in her seventies and she was surprised to receive my call. It was because it was her birthday and since I seldom call her, she asked if I knew it was her birthday and I said no.

My logical mind was not able to recognize God’s sign until I listened to a radio message that preached that nothing is left to chance by God. As I reflected on what happened on that day in August, my christian mind tells me that it was God’s sign for me to show more concern for her. I mean, one out of 365, that must be God’s will but my logical mind could not recognize it and tend to dismiss it as chance and did not prompt me to do anything. But on reflection after listening to the nothing left to chance message, my christian mind prompts me to heed it as a sign from God and to show more concern for that neighbor of mine. She lives alone and is probably lonely and I could do more by calling her more often.

Delivered from wrath

Two verses that suggest that we will be raptured before the tribulation:

Revelations 3:10:

10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.  -kjv

10 Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. -nkjv

10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth. -niv

1 Thessalonians 1:10

10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.  -kjv

10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. -nkjv

10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath. -niv

Brokenness

Brokenness – an important state to be in before the person is able to appreciate the grace of Jesus. It is not something that can be created artificially. It has to be the condition of the soul genuinely and to be experienced personally and through the course of life. It is usually preconditioned by pain, pain through a personal failure or pain through a loss or pain through a trial or pain through a feeling of worthlessness. No body wants to ask for pain purposely and hence it is not something that is planned.  The state of brokenness resulting from the pain has to encounter the good news of the gospel to produce good fruit.

Since brokenness is not something that can be planned, I cannot teach it as a lesson to my son but it has to experienced and pointed out to him as he goes through life and prayerfully the good news that has been taught to him as a child will make better sense.

Dejected

Most of the time I write when my spirits are up, sometimes I write when my spirits are down.

Today, I write after my spirits are lifted up when I read Isaiah 40:31 and after listening to uplifting music from a christian radio station after feeling dejected in the morning.

Isaiah 40:31 says:

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.  -kjv

The advantage of writing after a bout of dejection is to bring to mind the fresh dejected feelings so that people can identify with it and also to bring with it the effects of healing in God’s word.

The dejected feelings come after feeling sorry for myself and feeling lonely. The feelings come suddenly and a sudden drag and sadness fills my heart. Reading Isaiah 40:31 brings joy because I believe the scripture applys to me personally. I believe the scripture is what God is telling me. Then, you will need to have faith. Faith that the bible is true, faith about Jesus and so on. The background faith that brings with it the winds of rejuvenation of the spirit. This captured my feelings this morning.

It does help

Scripture memory is the first step to yearning more for scriptures and growing in Jesus.

I remembered what scripture memory does to me:

1) It helps me build up my confidence in my memory.

2) It helps me be clear of what I remembered and what I did not – a step to capturing our every thought.

3)  It helps me improve my vocabulary.

At this point of time, my son is not able to do all, though he is gaining more confidence. The important thing is getting started.

Now, I am rewarding him with online game purchases if he finishes ten memory verses. It gives him the motivation to start memorizing but he would stop  after a while because he could not complete the goal. Just have to prompt him to start again when he spots another new online game and wants to get that reward.

Pray for the Holy Spirit to work on him as he remembers what he memorized. Pray that God will help him understand and internalize what he memorize. Pray that he will grow spiritually

Role model

I think children live in a reactionary mode. Their behavior is constantly copying what they have seen in their outside world and is constantly shaped by it. My son’s outside world consist of home, school, ipad and TV. He is constantly bombarded and shaped by what he sees in school and at home and also the games he plays on ipad and the TV programs he watches. He is influenced by his classmates, his teachers and other people in school and also by us father and mother in the family. In order to grow to maturity, he needs someone to look up to. He needs a role model.

Sadly, I am not a good role model for my son. I cannot be a person that he wants to copy. That is because if he grows up to be a person like me, he is going to be withdrawn and disengaged, which I do not want him to be. The world that I live in now is a much different world from what I experienced say 10 years ago, at least in Singapore. I am still living in the world 10 years ago in Singapore and I do not intend to change  the way I speak, the way I think as I was 10 years back in Singapore or else I will be a very different person. God has made me the way I am and I intend to live the way that I am 10 years back in Singapore probably up till I die.

Home is where the mind is trained. Maybe my son cannot copy the way that I speak or even in the way that I think. But I think I can provide some guidance along the way. I can still influence his thinking and his character even though I am not the role model. I can point to him the way to go by good old fashioned logical thinking and christian faith. It has to be expressed and  articulated and I need to consolidate these essentials probably through penning it down. He also needs to have the desire to learn logical thinking and the christian faith as well. Part of my job is to nurture that desire. The old fashioned logical thinking and the christian faith has to introduced and added to what society has molded him to be thus far.

Judgement

Hebrews 9:27

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: -kjv

27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, -nkjv

27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, -niv

Meditations

1) I am now living in an age where every movement of mine is recorded, broadcasted and judged by men.

2) I am not afraid of judgement by men.

3) What I am living now is just a foretaste of that judgement before God where not only every movement is recorded and judged but every motive will be laid bare before God. I tremble at that judgement. Do you?

4) Even that judgement by God will be made bearable because of Jesus.

Daily Grace

LIGHTbreak

“Give us today our daily bread.” – Matthew 6:11

A common Christian practice is to say “grace” before a meal.  Sometimes, the prayer is heartfelt.  Quite often though, the prayer comes out as a string of trite phrases, probably ones we learned as a kid or heard others say in their pre-meal routine.  That’s too bad, because saying grace is a profound way to remind ourselves of our identity in Christ.

Saying grace, in its truest sense, involves acknowledging that all we have comes from God, including the food set before us.  Stop for a moment and let that sink in.  Yes, God gave that food to you along with everything else you’ve got, not because you deserve it, but because He loves you for who you are.  Now, you may protest that you worked hard to earn a living.  But who endowed you with the strength, skills, and smarts…
