Matthew 12
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. -kjv
36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” -niv
36 I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” -hcsb
Question: Does this verse refer to believers or unbelievers or to all?
Wow…for people like me who enjoy to talk possibly I should cut back this habit. The more we talk, the more our chance to say something that should not be said. I have know this scripture most of my life but have not listened as closely as I should have.

Matthew 12:36-37 was implied at the pharisees

Believers will not be condemned in the days of judgment as in Romans 8:1
1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. -kjv
So Matthew 12:37 should apply to non-believers. However, believers will still be judged for their rewards in heaven
as in 1 Corinthians 13:11-13
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

God knows EVERYTHING as we should know. All people will be judged on the last day the seeds he sowed during his entire lifetime.
